A Tale of Two Cities (Part 2) with Scott Postma – Spring 2020

Eleven-week course for adults

The Tale of Two Cities is not a course on Charles Dickens’ famous novel, however relevant the title. Rather it is a two-part course on the two belief systems that have, since the garden of Eden, built two distinct cities in the world.

In Part One of this course, we will examine Plato’s The Republic and Hesiod’s Theogony alongside the Bible. In Part Two of this course, we will examine St. Augustine’s The City of God.

These two courses will juxtapose the Christian view of society and its institutions (family, government, church) over against the secular view of society and its institutions. Anyone with a moral vision for the world and an interest in human flourishing will appreciate the scriptural insights concerning these two visions of culture.

Spring 2020
The second semester of this live online course meets Mondays, 5:00-6:00 pm, PST, Jan 6 – March 30, 2020.

In this course, we will:

1. Meet online once-a-week for an hour.
2. Read and discuss Augustine’s The City of God.
3. Discuss the origins of the themes of the two cities in the Bible and Augustine’s City of God.
4. Discuss the influences of Christianity on the State.
5. Compare The City of God in Augustine’s work by the same name with the City of Speeches created by Plato in The Republic (we read The Republic in Part One of this course).
6. Consider the perennial human questions raised by political philosophy and examine the biblical principles that speak to them, as well as discuss contemporary applications that might inform our worldview.

The only ‘homework’ will be to read the assigned portion of the book and be ready to plunge into a lively discussion. Participants will be able to enjoy casual and interesting interaction from the comfort of their own homes.
